Steel Pipe Standards Compared: ASTM, EN, API, ISO and Chinese GB
Every steel pipe you buy must meet a standard — the specification that fixes its chemistry, mechanical properties, dimensions, and testing. Global buyers regularly compare ASTM, ASME, API, EN, ISO, and Chinese GB standards. This guide explains how the systems relate and which one to choose.
The Main Standards Bodies
| Standard | Origin | Typical products covered |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM | USA | Carbon (A106), alloy (A335), stainless (A312), low-temp (A333) pipes |
| ASME | USA | Same material standards, adopted for pressure-vessel and boiler code use (SA prefix) |
| API | USA (oil & gas) | API 5L line pipe, API 5CT casing & tubing, API Q1 quality systems |
| EN | Europe | EN 10216 series for seamless pressure pipes, EN 10305 for precision tubes |
| ISO | International | ISO 3183 line pipe (equivalent to API 5L), ISO 11960 (casing/tubing) |
| GB | China | GB/T 8163, GB/T 5310, GB/T 14976, GB/T 9711, GB/T 3639 and many more |

Note: these are close equivalents, not exact matches. Chemistry, impact testing, and tolerances still differ. Always confirm the full requirement with your engineer.
Which Standard Should You Choose?
- Follow the project specification. If your contract, end user, or engineering consultant names a standard, that standard governs — even if an equivalent exists.
- Match your market and destination. European buyers commonly reference EN and PED; US/API projects reference ASTM/ASME and API; buyers in Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia frequently work with API or ISO; Chinese-equipment end users may specify GB.
- Ask about availability. Some grade-standard combinations are stock items; others are mill production with a lead time. Confirming your standard early avoids delivery surprises.
- Consider the testing requirements. PSL2 line pipe and low-temperature grades carry mandatory impact testing and higher inspection costs — budget accordingly.
FAQ
Is API 5L the same as ISO 3183? They are technically equivalent line pipe standards and are increasingly issued as API 5L/ISO 3183 dual-certified.
Is ASTM A106 Gr.B the same as GB/T 8163 20#? Close but not identical. Both are carbon seamless pipe, but chemistry limits, mechanical values, and testing differ. If your project requires A106, order A106.
Can a Chinese mill issue EN 10204 3.1 certificates for GB-standard pipe? Yes — Chinese mills routinely issue EN 10204 3.1 (and 3.2 with third-party countersignature) certificates for export orders regardless of the product standard.
Which standard is best for high-temperature service? For power plants and boilers, chrome-moly alloy grades (A335 P11/P22/P91 or equivalent) with creep-resistant design are the norm. See our alloy pipe guide.
