
Seamless Steel Pipe Glossary: 40+ Terms Every Buyer Should Know
Buying steel pipe across borders means negotiating a shared technical vocabulary. This glossary explains the terms you will see on datasheets, quotes, and mill test certificates — grouped by topic so you can jump straight to what you need.
Manufacturing Terms
- Seamless pipe — pipe produced from a solid round billet by piercing and rolling, so it has no longitudinal or spiral weld seam.
- Welded pipe — pipe formed from a flat strip, then joined by a longitudinal (ERW) or spiral (SSAW) weld.
- Billet — a solid round steel bar that is the raw material for seamless pipe.
- Piercing — the first hot-forming step that opens a hollow inside a solid billet.
- Hot rolling — forming steel above its recrystallization temperature.
- Cold drawing / cold rolling — sizing at room temperature to achieve tighter tolerances and a smoother surface.
- Heat treatment — controlled heating and cooling cycles that adjust the steel’s microstructure. Common cycles include normalizing, annealing, and quench-and-temper (Q&T).
- Normalizing — a heat treatment that refines the grain structure to improve toughness.
- Quench & temper (Q&T) — hardening by rapid cooling followed by re-heating to balance high strength with toughness.
- Honing — machining the inside bore to a precise size and smooth finish, typical for hydraulic cylinder tubes.
- Skiving — removing a thin inner surface layer of cold-drawn tube.
- Pickling & passivation — acid cleaning (and surface treatment for stainless steel) that removes scale and restores corrosion resistance.
Dimension Terms
- OD / WT / ID — outer diameter, wall thickness, and inner diameter. Remember:
ID = OD − 2 × WT. - NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) — the inch-based nominal designation (for example, NPS 8).
- DN (Diameter Nominal) — the metric nominal diameter used in Europe and Asia (for example, DN200).
- Schedule (SCH) — the wall-thickness series (SCH 40, SCH 80, etc.). A given NPS can be supplied in several schedules.
- Random length vs. fixed length — random lengths fall in a range (for example, 6–12 m); fixed lengths are cut to one exact dimension.
- Dimensional tolerance — the allowable deviation from the nominal OD, WT, and length.
Standards & Certification Terms
- ASTM / ASME — American standard bodies widely used for carbon, alloy, and stainless pipes (A106, A335, A312, etc.).
- API — American Petroleum Institute standards for oil and gas products (API 5L line pipe, API 5CT casing & tubing).
- EN — European standards (EN 10216 series for seamless pressure pipe).
- ISO — International Organization for Standardization; ISO 3183 is the international line pipe standard.
- GB — Chinese national standards (GB/T 8163, GB/T 5310, GB/T 14976, etc.).
- PSL1 / PSL2 — API 5L product specification levels; PSL2 has stricter chemistry control, mandatory impact testing, and per-pipe certification.
- MTC / Mill Test Certificate — the document certifying the pipe’s chemical and mechanical properties. EN 10204 defines types 2.2, 3.1, and 3.2.
- EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 — inspection certificates: 3.1 is issued by the mill with its own inspection; 3.2 is also countersigned by an independent third party.
- Sour service / NACE MR0175 — requirements for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) environments, including hardness control and extra testing.
Mechanical Property Terms
- Yield strength — the stress at which the steel begins to deform permanently; the key design value for pressure piping.
- Tensile strength — the maximum stress the steel can withstand before fracture.
- Elongation — the percentage the pipe stretches before breaking; a measure of ductility.
- Hardness — resistance to indentation, reported in HBW, HRB/HRC, or HV.
- Impact test (Charpy V-notch) — a test of toughness at a specified temperature, mandatory for low-temperature and PSL2 line pipe.
- Creep strength — resistance to slow deformation under sustained high temperature and stress, critical for boiler and alloy tubes.
Ends, Surface & Coating Terms
- Plain end (PE) — square cut ends, ready for welding or further end preparation.
- Beveled end (BE) — ends cut at an angle to prepare for field welding.
- Threaded & coupled (T&C) — thread connections with a coupling, common on API 5CT tubing and casing.
- Black pipe — uncoated pipe in its natural dark mill scale finish.
- Galvanized — zinc-coated for corrosion resistance in water and general service.
- Oiled ends — protective oil applied to ends to prevent rust in transit.
Testing & Inspection Terms
- Hydrostatic test — pressure test with water to verify leak-tightness and strength.
- Ultrasonic testing (UT) — NDT method that uses sound waves to detect internal flaws.
- Eddy current testing — NDT method for detecting surface and near-surface defects.
- Magnetic particle (MPI) / radiographic (RT) — additional NDT methods used on critical material.
- NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) — any inspection that does not damage the pipe.
- Third-party inspection — independent verification by organizations such as SGS, BV, or TÜV.
- PMI (Positive Material Identification) — verification of alloy chemistry, often via handheld XRF.
Trade Terms
- MOQ — minimum order quantity, usually expressed in metric tons.
- Lead time — the time from order confirmation to readiness for shipment.
- Incoterms — international trade terms defining delivery responsibility: EXW, FOB, CIF, CFR, and others.
- T/T (Telegraphic Transfer) — bank wire payment, typically 30% deposit and 70% balance against documents.
- L/C (Letter of Credit) — a bank-guaranteed payment method common for large orders.
- D/P — documents against payment.
- Proforma invoice (PI) — the preliminary invoice used to confirm order details and payment terms.
- CO (Certificate of Origin) — document declaring the country of manufacture.
- HS code — the harmonized customs classification code for your pipe product.
FAQ

Do I need to state NPS or actual OD and wall thickness? Always provide the actual OD and wall thickness in millimeters or inches. NPS alone is ambiguous across schedules.
