Choosing between seamless and welded steel pipe is one of the first decisions a buyer makes. The right choice depends on the application, operating pressure and temperature, and of course budget. Here is what you need to know.
What Is a Seamless Steel Pipe?
A seamless steel pipe is produced from a solid round steel billet. The billet is heated and pierced to create a hollow tube, which is then elongated, rolled and sized to the required dimensions — all without any longitudinal or helical weld.
Because there is no weld seam, seamless pipes have uniform structure and strength across the whole cross-section, which makes them the first choice for high-pressure and high-temperature service.
What Is a Welded Steel Pipe?
A welded pipe starts from a flat steel strip or plate that is rolled into a cylinder and joined at the seam by welding (electric resistance welding, submerged arc welding, etc.).
Welded pipes are generally more economical to produce in large diameters and long lengths, and modern welding technology has greatly improved their quality. However, the weld seam remains a potential weak point under extreme pressure or cyclic loading.

- Project specifications require API 5L PSL2 or ASTM A106 seamless
