How to Choose the Right Steel Pipe Grade for Your Export Project

Buyers often ask: “Which steel pipe grade should I use?” The answer depends on four things: the medium, the operating pressure and temperature, the applicable standard, and the regulatory requirements of the destination country.

Step 1: Identify the Application

  • Oil & gas transmission → API 5L, grades Gr.B to X70
  • High-temperature plant piping → ASTM A106 Gr.B/C, GB/T 5310, EN 10216-2
  • Boiler and heat exchanger tubes → ASTM A192, A210, A179, GB/T 5310
  • Oil and gas wells → API 5CT casing and tubing (J55 to P110)
  • General structural → ASTM A53, GB/T 8163, EN 10210

Step 2: Define Pressure and Temperature

Higher pressure and temperature require stronger, more alloyed material. Two simple rules:

  • For medium above 425°C, avoid standard carbon steel and consider alloy grades such as 15CrMoG, P11 or P22.
  • For internal pressure, select a grade whose yield strength comfortably exceeds the design stress per ASME B31 or the applicable local code.

Step 3: Match the Standard

Different countries require different standards:

Region Common Standards
China GB/T 8163, GB/T 9711, GB/T 5310
North America ASTM A106, A53, A192, API 5L
Europe EN 10216, EN 10210, DIN 2448
CIS / Russia GOST 8732, GOST 8734, GOST 632

Buyers exporting to Africa and Southeast Asia commonly accept API and ASTM standards, but always confirm with the local authority or project consultant first.

Step 4: Consider the Environment

  • Humid, coastal regions → consider corrosion protection or coated pipe
  • H2S present → specify NACE MR0175 compliant grades
  • Cold climates → verify impact toughness (e.g. Charpy V-notch at low temperature)

Step 5: Verify Quality Documents

For any export order, require:

  • Mill test certificate (MTC/EN 10204 3.1)
  • Heat number traceability
  • Hydrostatic test report
  • Third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) when the project demands it

When in Doubt, Ask the Supplier

A responsible supplier will confirm your grade selection with you. If your supplier never asks about the working conditions, that is a red flag.

Xbang Supply supplies a full range of carbon and alloy seamless pipes. Send us your application, pressure, temperature and destination country, and we will confirm the correct grade and standard — free of charge, within 24 hours.
