Inspection and Testing of Seamless Steel Pipes: What Buyers Should Verify
When importing seamless steel pipe, the difference between a good shipment and a costly problem often comes down to inspection. Here is what quality control actually covers — and what you should verify before money transfers.
1. Chemical Composition Analysis
Each heat of steel is tested for carbon, manganese, silicon, sulfur, phosphorus and alloying elements. Results are reported in the mill test certificate. Verify the composition matches the grade and standard you ordered.
2. Mechanical Property Tests
Standard tests include:
- Tensile test — yield strength, tensile strength and elongation
- Impact test (Charpy) — toughness, mandatory for API 5L PSL2 and many standards
- Hardness test — important for sour-service and casing applications
- Flattening, bending and flaring tests — verify ductility of the pipe body
3. Hydrostatic Testing
Every pipe should be hydrostatically tested at a pressure well above its working pressure to verify there are no leaks. The test pressure and duration are stated in the standard and must appear in the certificate.
4. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
- Ultrasonic testing (UT) — detects internal and surface defects
- Electromagnetic / eddy-current testing — detects surface defects
- Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) — for surface and near-surface defects
Specify NDT in your purchase contract when the application is critical.
5. Dimensional and Visual Checks
- Outer diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness and out-of-roundness
- End preparation quality and bevel angle
- Surface condition — no cracks, laps or deep scratches
- Wall thickness uniformity around the circumference
6. Documentation
The most important export documents are:
- Mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with full chemical and mechanical results
- Hydrostatic test certificates
- Heat treatment records
- Third-party inspection reports (SGS, BV, TÜV) if arranged
7. Third-Party Inspection
For large orders, hire an independent inspection company to witness testing and inspect loading at the mill or warehouse. This is standard practice in international steel trade and protects both buyer and seller.
A Simple Buyer Checklist
- Confirm the standard and grade before ordering
- Require MTC with heat traceability
- Agree on NDT and hydrostatic requirements in the contract
- Arrange third-party inspection for large orders
- Inspect packing and marking before loading
Xbang Supply provides complete test certificates with every order and supports third-party inspection at the warehouse or mill. Ask our sales team for sample certificates to see exactly what you will receive.
