ASTM A333 Low-Temperature Steel Pipe: Gr.6 Explained
At sub-zero temperatures ordinary carbon steel becomes brittle and can fracture without warning. ASTM A333 is the specification that keeps pipes tough when the mercury drops — down to -45°C and below.
What ASTM A333 Covers
ASTM A333 covers seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipe intended for low-temperature service. It is the specification most export projects reference for LNG, cryogenic, arctic and refrigeration applications.
Grade Overview
| Grade | Type | Min. Impact Test Temp |
|---|---|---|
| Gr.1 | Carbon steel | -45°C |
| Gr.3 | 3.5% Ni steel | -100°C |
| Gr.6 | Carbon steel | -45°C |
Gr.6 is by far the most commonly requested. It is a carbon steel grade with a specified minimum yield strength of 240 MPa, relying on normalizing and fine-grain practice to achieve low-temperature toughness at an economical cost.
Use Gr.3 (nickel steel) only when design temperature drops below -45°C.
Why Impact Testing Is Non-Negotiable
The core requirement of A333 is Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact testing. Each heat is tested at the minimum design temperature and must meet a minimum absorbed energy. This is not an optional add-on — it is the entire point of the standard.
When ordering, always confirm:
- Design minimum temperature (this selects the grade)
- Impact test temperature (usually -45°C for Gr.6)
- Number of specimens per heat
- Whether third-party witness testing (SGS, BV, TÜV) is required
Common Applications
- LNG plants and regasification terminals
- Cryogenic storage and air separation units
- Arctic and northern pipelines
- Refrigeration and low-temperature process lines
- Low-temperature pressure vessels and heat exchangers
